► Château de Maumont

Very close to Angoulême (10’ taxi drive) and hardly more than two hours from Paris by TGV, the elegant Château de Maumont, surrounded by an 18th century landscaped park with avenues of ancient lindens and a grove of whispering bamboo, will transport you to a world of relaxation and reverie far removed from the stress of daily life. Your first glimpse of the ivy-covered facade, the turreted private chapel, the wide sweep of lawn tells you that this is no ordinary place.

The tastefully decorated reception rooms, filled with art and furnished with an eclectic mix of family antiques, are warm and welcoming. On a winter's day they are the perfect spot to sink into a comfortable sofa in front of a fire in the enormous medieval fireplace to read or listen to music.

There are five spacious bedrooms furnished with family heirlooms, each with its own character: a blend of tradition and modern comfort. Standing at the 16th century windows with their leaded-glass panes, you have a sweeping view of the Touvre River as it flows under an arched stone bridge, the smooth surface of the water broken here and there by the passage of swans. Through the trees you can see the beautiful romanesque church of Magnac sur Touvre.

All is peace and calm and yet you are within easy distance of all that Angouleme offers. Expeditions further afield, to the Atlantic coast beaches, to the Dordogne or to visit famous local sites like Cognac, Aubeterre or La Rochefoucauld, are an easy drive from Magnac.

You are greeted with a warm and personal welcome, full of charm and discretion. Great care is taken to make sure your stay is extra-ordinary. Breakfast, served in the magnificent dining room, is a delicous, inventive feast that you will want to linger over.

An exceptional home to discover.
